Come Holy Ghost our Souls Inspire
As a young chorister I loved singing the classic Whitsuntide hymn Come Holy Ghost our Souls Inspire. I always felt there was something etherial in the words and music, even more so when this is sung in a large church, Cathedral of monastery. In essence it is a prayer:
Come Holy Ghost our souls inspire
And lighten with celestial fire
Thou the anointing Spirit art
Who dost Thy sevenfold gifts impart
Thy blessed unction from above
Is comfort life and fire of love
Enable with perpetual light
The dullness of our blinded sight
Anoint and cheer our soiled face
With the abundance of Thy grace
Keep far our foes give peace at home
Where Thou art guide no ill can come
Teach us to know the Father Son
And Thee of both to be but One
That through the ages all along
This this may be our endless song
Praise to Thy eternal merit
Father Son and Holy Spirit Amen
And what a prayer!
Every year we have a time of intense prayer that the Holy Spirit will some with power upon us, and rightly so, as throughout the year our prayer for this most precious gift often lessens as the months go by and we focus on other festivals.
In these days of lockdown you've probably prayed for most of the seven gifts: wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. The 1st 5 have certainly featured in my prayers. The last 2 have lost their meaning somewhat of the years. Piety is often seen in a negative way, equating it with a holier than thou attitude; we'd probably use words like faithful, holy, spiritual. However you might describe the 6th gift of the spirit I think there is something there about being intentional and dedicated in our prayers and relationship with God. And instead of fear of the Lord I guess we would say something like respect of the Lord.
However you might interpret, or reword into day's language, the most wonderful thing to remember is that the Holy Spirit is a gift from God. A life giving gift that sustains us, guides us and equips us in every part of our life. That same Holy Spirit that Jesus breathed on the disciples that 1st Easter morning as they gathered in the upper room, that same Spirit which gave birth to the church as the disciples began telling others the Good News, is offered as a gift to us.
I'm not sure which of the gifts of the spirit are uppermost in your prayers - in mine recently I think I've needed and prayed for them all, especially fortitude. Whether you're praying for one or all of the gifts it's good to remember that we have a generous God who is always far more ready to give than we are to ask.
May this time of prayer not only sustain you through difficult times but continue as you seek God guidance and blessing day by day.
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, sent by the Father,
ignite in us your holy fire;
strengthen your children with the gift of faith,
revive your Church with the breath of love,
and renew the face of the earth,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
