Thought for the Day by Andrew Cursham
There are only a few short statements in the Bible describing The Ascension of Jesus, and in some way this leaves me with so many questions. In The book of Acts we read:
And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." -
Acts 1:10-11
The instruction to the Apostles was that Jesus would return, and this is the promise that the church has held onto through the ages.
The readings from morning prayers for Sunday 24th May, are from Isaiah and Revelation, they both start in a similar way:
For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth;
the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind.
Isaiah 65
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
Revelation 21
In Isaiah God is announcing what he will do, and in Revelation, Saint John the Apostle has a vision into heaven of what will come to pass.
The Bible is full of promises and waiting. The two seem to always go together. The angel said to the Apostles: "He WILL return" and then there is the wait. And I'm sure that how we wait is really important. Right now I find myself wanting this country to return to how things were - to normal. But as Christians we are to wait and long for so much more than normal.
“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”
C S Lewis
Right now we’re are between Ascension and Pentecost; when we reflect on the Holy Spirit coming for the first time upon the waiting disciples.
Prayer
Heavenly Father make us good at waiting, make us patient and also eager for what you have promised.
Forgive us when we are frustrated with the way things are.
We turn to you, send upon us again your Holy Spirit, give us your peace which passes understanding.
Amen
